I am a Northamptonshire based working photographer with 15 years’ experience of photographing Landscapes, Fine Art, Portraits, Weddings and Events. At the beginning, a photography friend advised me to “find your path and stick to it”. I have struggled with that because I want to explore the many different genres of photography. As long as I have a desire to use a camera, I will challenge myself to make photographs in any situation and in any genre that interests me. And so far, I have not run out of challenges. Even the vagarys of both digital and analogue mediums have their place with me.

With Landscape photography, I hold no expectation of the weather, though that doesn’t stop me from being hopeful. Yes, I check the forecast (I’m usually praying for a bit of fog). Yes, I check tide times (usually for my own safety) and yes, I can check what time the sun will rise. But my approach is different these days - no more definitive planning. I quickly refer to the Photographer’s Ephemeris then head out and hope to be inspired. There are some words that I read from Charlie Waite a few years ago that every landscape photographer should heed which is to “lower your expectation” because very rarely does everything go to plan. My mantra is to discover, adapt, to live and learn.

As a divergence and inspired by the build quality, tangibility and iconic images created by my peers with medium format analogue cameras , I have set myself another challenge and now also shoot in 1:1 ratio with my Rolleiflex cameras. These cameras demand that you concentrate on a deeper level than taking a picture with a D-SLR and you must consider many factors; from the choice of film and developing negatives to scanning and the final print aesthetic. It’s a personal endeavour to achieve a unique representation of whatever it is that has inspired me to go out and take a picture.

In love with life and the outdoors, I regularly work on the Norfolk coast, Derbyshire, the South West and the Lake District. My urban photography is mostly centred around London and Birmingham. Beyond the UK, I have visited locations such as Venice, Santorini, Spain and the South of France many times.  These locations have inspired my photography practice and broadened my interest in the genre of ‘drawing with light’.

I am a graduate of Plymouth College of Art with a BA (Hons) Photography degree, where I was also awarded the Simon Gomery Award for Outstanding Achievement. I have presented at photographic clubs, featured in a number of magazines and online publications and have exhibited at Free Range at the Truman Brewery Building, Brick Lane, London. I am proud to be accredited as an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS).

If there is anything you would like to discuss with me, I would really like to hear from you.

All the best,

Gary.
